SPORT: Boys’ Tennis – Singles, Doubles and Team Championships
CLASSIFICATION: AA & AAA
TOURNAMENT SINGLES & DOUBLES: The Steering Committee seeds a 28 draw for
AAA and a 9 draw for AA District One Singles and Doubles Tournaments. Participation in the District I Tournament
is based on the number of schools participating in the League Dual Meets,
determined by the scale below.
4 to 6 Schools 2 Representatives
7 to 9 Schools 3 Representatives
10+ 4 Representatives
SINGLES:
Each League will set up their qualifying procedures to determine their
representatives to the Singles Championships.
DOUBLES: To determine the representatives for the
District I Doubles Championships a sectional or league doubles tournaments will
be held after May 1, 2010 so boys that have been eliminated in singles
competition may be used as members of the doubles team competition.
“No-AD” scoring will be used in the
first 2 rounds. Twelve Point Tie-breaker
will be used if the score reaches six all in
any set.
No school should be jeopardized in
league play because they have a boy
Participating in District Competition.
Participants will be contacted by the
League representative regarding starting time for singles and doubles.
Contestants not at the courts by these times will lose by forfeit.
INDEPENDENT MEMBER SCHOOLS:
Qualification procedures for independent schools to participate in the District
I Boys’ Championships are as follows:
Singles:
a. Independent
schools, as a group, must organize and run a qualifying tournament.
In the
event arrangements cannot be worked out to the mutual satisfaction of
participating independent schools, the resolution will be rendered by the District
Committee.
b. Participation
to the District I Tournament will be based on the following:
1 to 3
schools competing in qualifying tournament – l Representative
4 or more
schools – 2 Representatives

CHAMPIONSHIP RULES:
Reading the rules will be the only
warning. First offense- one point; second offense-one game; third offense- out
of the tournament. Anyone ejected from 1st three rounds will be
unable to advance to the double
tournament. Conduct on the court shall display good sportsmanship.
First round of AA.
Time out
and ask for a decision or assistance from the tournament Committee
Members. Only Committee members not involved with
coaching the match in question may make decisions about the match. No one may
leave the courts during this time.

accompanied by either a coach or an adult with written authorization from their School for the duration of the competition. Such written authorization must be presented to the tournament Chairperson prior to the start of the event.

Tennis - Team Championships
CLASSIFICATION:
AA & AAA – See PIAA website to determine your school’s team
Classification.
TOURNAMENT: The
steering committee will seed up to 9 teams for AA and 16 teams for AAA
Tournament.
FORMAT: The
League champions will automatically be entered into the tournament according
to their classification. The selection
for the additional positions (wild cards) in the
tournament will be based on League
record and the team’s record against common
opponent teams in District I. In the
event a League champion chooses not to
participate, this position will become
an additional wild card selection and open to
any at-large nomination from any
League. Steering Committee members must check
with their League members as to
interest in participating in the Tournament.
TEAM: 1.
Each Team shall consist of three(3) singles players and two (2) doubles Teams.
Players may only play one event (singles
or doubles). Each team, listing
students
in descending order of ability, shall establish a strength ladder
line-up from l to10.
The ladder submitted for the Team shall
represent the strongest line-up for that
Team.
The first three (3) students shall play singles in order that they are
listed
on the strength ladder line-up. Beginning
with the fourth student listed on the
the Doubles Teams. The doubles Team having the highest level of
ability shall
occupy the number 1 position and the doubles
Team having the second highest
level of ability shall occupy the number 2
position. No player shall be eligible for
a doubles Team unless they are listed on the
Team’s strength ladder line-up.
Teams shall submit their strength ladder
line-ups, which shall specify singles
Player
#1, singles player @2, singles player #3, doubles Team #1, and doubles Team #2, at the beginning of the District
Team Tennis Tournament. With the
Exception of authorized substitutions for illness, injury, or other extenuating circumstances (as determined by the appropriate Tournament Director), a team’s strength ladder line-up may not be changed throughout the respective District and Inter-District Team Tennis Tournaments.
CHANGE OF LADDER POSITION POLICY
OPTION #1
SUBSTITUTION FOR A PLAYER
Substitutions may be made only in
case of illness, injury, or other extenuating cir
circumstances (as determined
appropriate by the Tournament Director).
The school’s athletic administration and/or head tennis Coach shall
provide supporting documentation for such substitutions. An ill or injured player may be substituted
for and then be re-entered in the same position in the team’s strength ladder
line-up, upon documented authorization from a licensed physician of medicine or
osteopathic medicine. Teams are
prohibited from making substitutions that would allow an ill or injured player
to be moved from playing singles to doubles, and then back to singles when the
ill or injured player has recovered, even with a licensed physician of
medicine’s or osteopathic medicine’s documented authorization.
Substitutions shall be made by utilizing direct-line substitution ONLY. Substitution of a singles player shall be made from the remaining seven students and shall result in the three singles players playing in order of their ability, in accordance with the Team’s strength ladder line-up. Doubles Teams do not have to be disrupted in order to replace a singles player.
When a
singles player substitution is necessary, and a member of one of the school’s
established doubles Teams is designated as that substitute, the resulting
vacant doubles position shall be filled by a player from the Team’s strength
ladder line-up and, therefore, shall not be filled from the school’s other
established doubles Team.
Substitution
of both doubles partners shall be prohibited if only one of the two players
experiences an illness injury, or other extenuating circumstances (as
determined appropriate by the Tournament Director). Furthermore, substitution of a player from one of the school’s
established doubles Team to fill the spot of an ill/injured player on that
schools other doubles team shall be prohibited. Finally, changing the strength order of the school’s doubles
Teams following any appropriate direct-line substitution shall be prohibited.
OPTION #2
NO
SUBSTITUTION FOR A PLAYER
A player
from Team #A decides that he cannot play in his assigned match position on his
team’s ladder. The match is awarded to Team #B as a forfeit. There are no other
changes in the lineup and the overall match procedes with Team #B leading in the individual match score
1-0.
Moving
players around with the intent of gaining a competitive advantage is prohibited
and shall subject the Team to default from the Tournament.
PLAY: 1. USTA Rules shall be
followed and all rules pertaining to eligibility according to The PIAA by-laws will prevail.
2. Scoring
will be traditional-best of 3 sets. If
the score reaches “six-all” in
Any set, a 12 point tie-breaker shall
be used to determine the winner of the
Set.
3. The only
coaching will be during the 1 two minute break on the court, between 1st and 2nd
sets and between 2nd and 3rd
sets if the players should split sets.
They may take a 5 minute break and come off the courts at this time.
4. A written line-up must be presented
simultaneously by both coaches prior to the start of the match.
5. Introductions are to take place at
2:15 p.m. Warm up with the opponent is to
take
place at 2:30 P.M. and play begin by 2:45 P.M.
6. The
modified penalty point system of USTA shall apply. The first offense is a
Warning. Second offense, one point.
Third offense, one game. Fourth offense, default.
7. If a
match is postponed due to weather, it will be played on the rain date. If the
Match is aborted due to inclement weather, it must commence at the point of
interruption.
8. The
players will call their own score.
9. Grievances
will be handled by members of the Committee that are not coaching teams
involved in the grievance.

OFFICAL’S The coaches of the playing teams will
oversee the preliminary rounds of
ASSIGNMENT: the tournament. Both coaches are responsible for water and
first aid.
Scorekeepers
are to be use if either team has them. The District
Committee
will oversee the entire tournament. A tournament official,
Appointed
by the chairperson will oversee the semi finals and finals.
CONTESTANTS
ATTIRE: All
tennis contestants are required to wear appropriate tennis attire (i.e. school
issued tennis shirt and tennis shorts or skirt.) No exceptions are permitted. T-shirts without school
name/nickname, altered apparel, jeans, jewelry, and advertisements (other than
one visible logo/trademark not exceeding 2 ¼ square inches and 2 ¼ inches in
dimension on a cap, headband, visor, school issued tennis shirt, and tennis
shorts or skirt; and/or a school’s name/nickname) will not be permitted. The use of tape for the purpose o covering a
logo that does not meet the aforementioned specifications WILL NOT BE
PERMITTED. The school’s name/nickname
and/or school’s logo are permitted on the front and/or back of the school-issued
tennis shirt. Shoes with soles that leave discolored markings on competition
surfaces are prohibited.
AWARDS: First
place teams will receive a Team Trophy
First
and Second Place individuals will receive medals.
SCORE The
winning team must report the score to the chairperson the evening of
